Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Overview
Our District’s Board Policy 7540.09 - Artificial Intelligence (AI) outlines a balanced, people-centered approach to the use of AI in education and operations. It supports innovative use of AI tools to enhance teaching, learning, and productivity, while emphasizing that AI should never replace human judgment or interaction. The policy establishes clear expectations around transparency, ethical use, data privacy, and accountability, requiring that all AI-generated content be reviewed by staff and that sensitive or personally identifiable information is never entered into unapproved systems. Additionally, all AI tools must undergo a formal evaluation process and be approved by the Technology Department to ensure compliance with legal, security, and educational standards.
Approved AI Tools
Below is a list of AI tools that have been reviewed and approved for use within the District. The evaluation process includes guidance and resources from the Kent ISD AI Collective to support informed, responsible decision-making:
- ChatGPT for Teachers – AI assistant designed to support instructional planning, content creation, and classroom communication
- Google Gemini – AI tool for research, writing support, and integration with Google Workspace applications
- NotebookLM (Workspace for Education) – AI-powered research and note-taking tool that helps users summarize, organize, and interact with their own documents and sources
- Canva Magic Studio – AI-powered design tools for creating presentations, graphics, and visual content
- Copilot (for Education) – AI assistant integrated with Microsoft 365 for document creation, data analysis, and productivity tasks
- Claude – AI assistant designed for writing, analysis, and thoughtful responses, with a focus on safety, accuracy, and handling longer documents and complex tasks
Note: These approvals are recommended for staff/teacher use and do not necessarily indicate approval for student use. Staff are encouraged to review each tool in detail using the Kent ISD AI Collective resource linked above, which provides additional information on appropriate use cases, intended audiences, and considerations for classroom implementation.
